Liberal Democracy
Flourishing in Africa

About-us-Africa-Liberal-Network
The Africa Liberal Network was launched in June 2003, as an alliance of liberal democratic political parties. The network is an associate regional organisation of Liberal International, the global federation of liberal democratic political parties, organisations, networks, think-tanks and individuals.

The network’s vision is that of a prosperous and integrated Africa, of flourishing democracies, that are at peace with one another, in which every person has the right and opportunity to fulfil their highest, truest expression of yourself as a human being.

Where we come from

A Brief History of
the Africa Liberal Network:

Developed from what was originally called the Organisation of African Liberal Parties, the network was established during an initial meeting of political parties in Mombasa, July 2001, and was later launched formally in Johannesburg, June 2003. At the Johannesburg, June 2003 meeting, one of our cornerstone commitments, the Johannesburg Declaration was adopted, pledging like-minded political parties, organisations, networks, think-tanks and individuals to the core principles of liberal democracy.
The network’s secretariat initially operated from the Headquarters of the Liberal Democrats, in London, before a permanent office was establishing in on the continent. Our first permanent office was housed in the Federal Head Office of the Democratic Alliance, in Cape Town, South Africa.

Since January 2020 the permanent office has been housed in the Friedrich Naumann Foundation’s Sub-Sahara Africa Regional Office, in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The network’s secretariat is fully funded by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for freedom.

Our Mission and Vision

The network’s mission is to support and empower political parties, organisations, networks, think-tanks and individuals, to grow their support, to increase their influence on politics and to implement policies of good governance when in government.

In partnership with our members and strategic partners, the network advocates for values of freedom and the individual choice of association across the continent by:
• Championing Liberal policy solutions to Africa’s challenges;

• Capacitating Liberal Democratic member parties with innovative skills, necessary to win elections and lead governments;

• Providing a platform for like-minded advocates of good governance, to network and share experience, skills and ideas;
All members of the network are bound by statutory obligations afforming allegiance to ensure the freedoms and dignity of all people, through establishing political and civil rights, upholding the rule of law, supporting democratic governance based on free and fair elections with peaceful transition, ensuring religious, gender and minority rights, fighting corruption and supporting economic freedom, regional integration and free trade opportunities, like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
We are proudly associated with the following partners:
